The Mission

The mission of OneChildOneLight is to provide every child, who so far is dependent on a fossil fuel powered study light, with a solar powered study light that is bright, non-polluting, dependable and economical by the year 2020
  

The OneChildOneLight Story
In many developing countries of the world, there are millions of school-going children who live in semi-urban and rural areas. These children have no access to a clean and safe light that can help them study after dark.

Most of these children depend on kerosene or oil based lamps for studying during night. These lamps emit very low light, give out smoke, soot and toxic fumes and cause serious health hazards for the children; the children, who use these lamps, are afflicted with eye and respiratory problems. Further, these lamps are potentially dangerous, as they can result in fire accidents and cause burn injuries to the children.
 
As per Census India estimates, nearly 95% of the homes in 
Bihar, 87% in Jharkhand, 76% in Uttaranchal and 74% in Orissa states use kerosene, LPG, and other fossil fuels for lighting purposes. A similar situation prevails in the  rural and semi-urban areas of other developing countries in rest of Asia and Africa as well.

India alone has over 120 million (12 Crore) school going children (as per Census India data). More than 70% of these children still depend on oil lamps for studying in the dark. There is a dire need to address this issue at the earliest. > Learn more
  
Since 2002, Dr. Ranganayakulu Bodavala, a Harvard alumnus and Founder President of THRIVE (an NGO working towards benefiting rural and tribal communities in Home Lighting, ICT, Education and Health using advanced and innovative technologies), has been passionately developing a series of LED based lighting solutions to address a range of home and institutional lighting needs of  rural communities. Later in 2007, having found the need to manufacture a range of solar powered LED lighting solutions on a large scale Dr. Ranga founded THRIVE  Energy Technologies Pvt Ltd. (TET) 
 
One of the innovative solutions of Dr.Ranga for addressing the night study needs of children located in rural, semi-urban and off-grid geographies of the world is TET’s Accendo Study Light. This Light is a solar powered LED Light that is economical, robust, eco-friendly, safe, dependable, bright, portable and easily rechargeable.
 
With the ambitious goal of propagating and ensuring that one Accendo Study Light of TET is in possession of every needy child in the developing nations, Dr.Ranga formed an action OCOL team and laid the foundation for the OneChildOneLight mission.
 
One Child One Light is a Trust registered under the TRUST ACT of India.
